“Social bookmarking is an activity performed over a computer network that allows users to save and categorize (see folksonomy) a personal collection of bookmarks and share them with others. Users may also take bookmarks saved by others and add them to their own collection, as well as to subscribe to the lists of others.”

One of the more interesting of the various social bookmarking sites is Digg.com.

Digg is a news website with an emphasis on technology and science articles.

It combines social bookmarking, blogging, and syndication with a form of non-hierarchical, democratic editorial control. News stories and websites are submitted by users, and then promoted to the front page through a user-based ranking system. This differs from the hierarchical editorial system that many other news sites employ.

Digg is all about user powered content. Every article on digg is submitted and voted on by the digg community. Users can share, discover, bookmark, and promote the news that’s important to them!

Submitting stories is easy. Once you’ve registered and signed in, simply click on “submit a story” and enter the URL of the story you would like to submit.

Then fill out a title, description, and category for the story. Should you encounter a potential duplicate, please digg the original story and do not submit a duplicate entry.

Once a story is submitted by a user it is instantly posted in the Upcoming stories section. This is a temporary holding place where stories wait to be promoted to the homepage. To help promote stories to the homepage, simply visit the Upcoming stories section and digg stories you think are cool. Once a story has received enough diggs, it is instantly promoted. Should the story not receive enough diggs, surpass 24 hours, or is reported, it eventually falls out of the Upcoming stories section. Read the rest of this entry »

There are still some social bookmarking websites that are good, but most of them are not.

It does not mean these sites are totally useless. You can get tons of traffic, but not a useful strategy to get backlinks. This does not mean you should completely ignore social bookmarking websites, but you need to be more careful how you spend you time and money.

There are services who still do social bookmarking. There are software which still submit to these sites. The sales pages will not change to show the complete truth. The services want
to make money, they will not adopt to the change maybe because they do not want to loose clients or it can be any other reason.

Bottom line is, social bookmarking websites are no longer effective to get a ton of backlinks like they once was.

If you think about it, it is not their fault. It is an advantage for them to use the nofollow tag, so they get rid of spammers who constantly submit their website or useless doorway pages just to get backlinks. There was black hat software as well, to automatically create accounts in these websites and then get a ton of backlinks easily.

All these things effected the change.

Social bookmarking websites do not need this stuff. They are created to help visitors as a service to allow them to bookmark websites they like or frequently visit.

Spamming creates problems for them. It totally makes things ugly for them. Read the rest of this entry »

Today lifelong learning opportunities are plentiful and instructors well-versed in space age information delivery. Still, millions fail to take advantage. They need constant reminders of the pot of gold at the end of the adult education rainbow.

Five bright benefits come to mind. First is the prospect of a fatter paycheck. Job promotions go to smart people who keep up with the latest information and technology. It’s just good sense to refresh and retrain for the workplace. New careers are created all the time so those who see what’s coming and want to jump ship have got to be prepared with new certifications, diplomas and degrees.

Second is the enhanced self-esteem when you reach for new horizons, accept tough challenges and arrive at a whole new level. New learning is not a picnic but the joys of accomplishment are real. Your children are proud. Your neighbors are surprised and maybe just jealous enough to go out and do likewise.

Third is the freedom given to adult learners. The teacher is more facilitator than dictator. Adult students, unlike young kids, may be just as experienced as the person at the front of the room.
